Locks and Keys that Work

  1. A Few Key Facts:

The Fine Art of Key Duplication starts with a Baldino's locksmith. It takes a minimum of six to twelve months to train a key smith; that is, a person who duplicates keys that work. They must master twelve types of machines, and learn how to manufacture keys from codes or from scratch. To go on to become a locksmith, it takes four years of training to include all facets of the industry. Due to the introduction of new products and newer electronics, the training is continuous. The locksmith must learn the alphabet of keys for over 1,000 duplicate blanks and be able to select without hesitation the correct one for use for each request. Additionally, modern automobiles are using transponders in the key blanks which will require programming after the key is duplicated mechanically. Baldino's is able to properly identify, cut, and program many of these transponder keys so they will operate your vehicle.

  2. All Key Blanks Are Not Created Equal

Key blanks are NOT created equally! The strength and quality of the key blank is critical, ensuring resistance to bending or cracking at stress points. A good quality key blank is necessary for accurate key duplication. Baldino's knows this and a return visit to correct problems with your duplicate key(s) isn't necessary because the job is done right the first time. Thinner is also NOT better! Home centers and hardware stores are able to charge less for key duplication simply because the key blanks used are thinner, and therefore susceptible to bending and/or breaking. Additionally, most home center and hardware store employees simply do not have specific knowledge of lock mechanisms or the experience to know exactly why a key you got copied won't work your lock. If you revisit us for the same key, we will do what is necessary to find out why your key doesn't work and give you a key that works.

In order to save money on brass and machinery to mill key blanks with exacting tolerances, many key manufacturers mill the key blank outside of specifications. Due to thinner construction, the key blanks will insert into the lock, but wobble in the keyway, causing the duplicated key to turn hard, hang up or get stuck, resulting in breakage. Modern automotive keys are especially critical, as the locking mechanisms in the vehicle can be damaged by keys that are improperly cut on the wrong blank.

  3. Quality Equipment:

It starts with the key machines Baldino's uses. Machines with accurate adjustment mechanisms and strong, powerful motors with high quality cutting wheels ensure the smooth milling of new key blanks. Baldino's locksmiths, in order to provide the highest quality of service, adjust the tolerance of every key machine on a weekly basis. They are trained to fine tune each machine to achieve maximum performance.
